Biography
Justice Gregory Carl Cook (“Greg”) was elected to the Alabama Supreme Court in 2022. He is the son of Gene and Dottie Cook and is from Florence, Alabama. From a young age, his parents instilled in him faith, the value of hard work, and the importance of public service. He discovered early his passion for the conservative, optimistic principles of President Ronald Reagan’s shining city on a hill. Justice Cook attended Duke University on an Air Force ROTC scholarship where he graduated magna cum laude in 1984 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He then served our country in the United States Air Force, reaching the rank of Captain. In 1991, Justice Cook graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School where he served as an Executive Editor of the Federalist Society’s Journal of Law and Public Policy. After finishing law school, Justice Cook moved back to Alabama and practiced law at Balch & Bingham LLP. During his over 31 years in private practice, he handled a wide variety of matters in over 40 of Alabama’s 67 counties and in over 15 different states, including jury trials, bench trials, and arbitrations. A large part of his practice involved complex commercial litigation including a number of class actions. He is the author of the two-volume treatise Alabama Rules of Civil Procedure Annotated (5th Edition) and is the co-author and editor of two books: Class Action Strategy & Practice Guide (2018) and The Class Action Fairness Act: Law and Strategy (2013 and 2022). Before taking the bench, Justice Cook also served for many years on the Alabama Supreme Court Standing Committee on the Rules of Civil Procedure. While in private practice, Justice Cook received numerous awards and rankings from Chambers USA, Best Lawyers, BTI Client Service All-Star, Benchmark, Super Lawyers, and Martindale-Hubbell. Justice Cook has been active as a volunteer in the Alabama and Birmingham Bar Associations. He served as Past Chair of the Business Torts and Antitrust Section and a Bar Examiner (subject-matter expert) for the Alabama Bar Association and was elected a Fellow in the Alabama Law Foundation. Justice Cook also served as a member of the Grievance Committee and a Past Chair of the Civil Courts Procedure Committee for the Birmingham Bar and was elected a Life Fellow in the Birmingham Bar Foundation. He is a long-time member of the Federalist Society and the American Inns of Court, among other legal groups. Justice Cook gives back to his community by volunteering his time. For many years, he has served as a Boy Scout leader, including as an officer and board member for the Greater Alabama Council and with his local troops. The Boy Scouts have recognized him with the Silver Beaver Award, the Good Shepherd Award, Order of the Arrow, and Wood Badge. Justice Cook has also spent countless hours volunteering in election administration and election disputes over many years. Justice Cook has been married to his wife Kimberly, a Vestavia Hills City Councilwoman, since 1988. They have three children: Geoffrey (a University of Alabama graduate and software developer), Mary Catherine (a new admittee to the Alabama Bar), and Will (a recent graduate from the University of Alabama). Since 1991, Justice Cook has been a faithful member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church where he was ordained as a Deacon and served as a youth Sunday School leader for over 20 years.
