Kids to Love fundraiser sends participants "Over the Edge" in Huntsville
Downtown spectators can watch rappellers descend the Regions Center while enjoying food, family activities and football during the foster care fundraiser.
Dozens of participants will rappel 160 feet down the side of the Regions Center in downtown Huntsville this week to raise money for children in foster care.
Kids to Love's annual Over the Edge fundraiser will take place September 18 and 19. Participants do not need rappelling experience, and registration remains open.
Friends, relatives, co-workers and other spectators can watch from the street as participants, known as "Edgers," descend the building.
"We love seeing this event take over downtown," said Lee Marshall, founder and CEO of Kids to Love. "It's a little crazy, it's a lot of fun, and it gives people a chance to do something memorable while helping children in foster care."
Organizers will host a street party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the base of the Regions Center. Activities will include bath bomb painting by Buff City Soap, princess appearances and visits from Huntsville Havoc mascots. Southerland Sno Depot and LawLers Tasty Trailer will provide food.
KTECH will offer a Virtual Edger experience to give visitors a sense of rappelling down the building without leaving the ground. Bluewood Productions will operate a Game Day Outpost where visitors can watch football while following the rappelling event.
Money raised through Over the Edge supports several Kids to Love initiatives, including KTECH, the Smith Family Wellness Center and More Than a Backpack.
KTECH provides workforce training and career preparation. The Smith Family Wellness Center offers trauma therapy, and More Than a Backpack provides school supplies to children in foster care.
Kids to Love is a Madison-based nonprofit that works to meet the immediate needs of children in foster care. It also supports educational opportunities, workforce training, trauma therapy and permanent placement efforts.
People can register to rappel, contribute to a participant's fundraising campaign or learn more on the Over the Edge event page. Spectators can attend for free.
