Major improvements coming to Walker County Public Fishing Lake
The Jasper-area lake will close September 7 for upgrades including new restrooms, bait shop, event space and improved access.
The Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will temporarily close Walker County Public Fishing Lake for a major improvement project beginning Monday, September 7, 2026. The last day to fish at the lake before the project begins will be Sunday, September 6.
The improvements will include upgrades to the entrance road and parking lot, restrooms, a new concession and bait shop, a new entry gate and construction of a new event space.
“Walker County Lake is a special place for local and area residents,” Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Commissioner Chris Blankenship said. “Projects like this show how community venues can provide outdoor recreation for multiple user groups. Completion of the project will improve the experience of those who fish at the lake and enjoy the other amenities it has to offer for decades to come.”
The improvements are expected to be completed in summer 2027. Depending on weather and other construction-related factors, the lake may reopen for fishing next spring. Project updates will be announced when available.
Alabama Senator Matt Woods, who represents Senate District 5, which includes Jasper, welcomed the improvements.
“I am excited for this project to begin at Walker County Lake,” Woods said. “The new facilities and additional improvements will benefit everyone in our community. This is an important investment in outdoor recreation for our region, and I appreciate the Department of Conservation committing the necessary resources to bring this project forward. Once completed, the lake will feature modern facilities that are on par with our state parks.”
The 163-acre Walker County Public Fishing Lake is located 3 miles southeast of Jasper and is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, crappie, hybrid striped bass and seasonal trout. To learn more, visit www.outdooralabama.com/public-fishing-lakes/walker-county-pfl.
